Self-Portraits & Portfolios Tell About Me
by Shelley Schoby
In art this week, second grade students were introduced to the artists Jacob Lawrence and Frida Kahlo. Both artists painted self-portraits and are known for their unique artistic styles. Jacob Lawrence paints with bold blocks of color and Frida Kahlo paints with many exotic details. Jacob was influenced by his African- American ancestry. Frida was influenced by her native country, Mexico. Both artists included details that tell something about themselves in their work.
Students modeled step-by-step facial drawing instructions this led to the correct placement and proportions of facial features, hair, neck and shoulders. Each students’ self-portrait was unique due to the details they included in their drawing.
Finally, students glued self-portraits onto the cover of their portfolio. Each portfolio will hold students artwork. The body of artwork will demonstrate how each student has grown as an artist as well as demonstrate knowledge gained in art lessons.
