We Are Buggy About Art
by Shelley Schoby, K-2 Art Specialist

In art this week, students created colorful bugs and plants by combining geometric shapes. Kindergarten students started this lesson with a story “The Bugs Go Marching”. Next, students were introduced to the artist Henri Rousseau. A comparison was made between the silly monkeys in Rousseau’s painting to the silly bugs in the story. Students identified the overlapped areas of Rousseau’s picture. Overlapping makes and object appear close and another object farther away.
In P.E. with Mr. Williams, students exercise their large muscles. In art, students exercise their small motor muscles in their hands by cutting paper. Students imitated Rousseau by overlapping torn paper grass. Geometric paper shapes were combined to create silly animals that crawl, hop, slither and fly.
