Curriculum: High Ability: FAQ's

What are the procedures for identifitying high ability learners within the Blair Community Schools?

The Blair Community Schools utilizes the following multiple criteria for identification of intellectually and academically high-ability learners:
•Teacher nomination
•Scholastic aptitude measures
•Standardized achievement tests
•Individual intelligence evaluations
•School achievement records
•Parent nomination
•Self nomination
•Peer nomination

The students must meet three of the following:

1. Ability Measure:
a. On the group ability measurement (Cognitive Abilities Test): achieve a score at the 99th percentile in one of the primary areas (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative) or achieve scores at the 98th percentile in two of the primary areas (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative) or on an individual psychological test (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Third Edition or Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition): achieve a total score at the 99th percentile.

2. Group Achievement Test:
a. On the group achievement test (Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills) achieve a total battery score at the 99th percentile.

3. Past Performance:
a. Consistent high past performance as demonstrated by report card grades, test performance, and other measures of achievement.

4. Personal Characteristics:
a. Achieve a high score on the high-ability characteristics scale completed by teachers.
