Trees from Many Seasons
by Shelley Schoby, K-2 Art Specialist
We started this lesson by learning about the Dutch artist, Piet
Mondrian and his work, Tree II. Students were introduced to the
vocabulary word style.
Piet Mondrian’s charcoal drawing of a tree is rendered
in the abstract style of expressionism. All understood that
individuals perceive artwork differently depending upon their past
experiences.
Second grade students worked hard to improve their artistic skills
during this lesson. The basic tree shape was compared to geometric
shapes. Students used their hands as view finders to determine the
shape of a tree. The Principle of Design symmetry was introduced to
students. Students visualized a tree divided in half and placed on
a scale. If both halves took up the same amount of space the tree
is balanced.... it has symmetry.
First students practiced drawing trees in sketchbooks. For their
final drawing students drew a deciduous or conifer tree. The tree
and details were placed in an environment that would be appropriate
for a time of day and a season.
Finally students practiced their watercolor painting skills.
Students worked on the following techniques; wet-on-dry, wet-on-wet
and dry brush.
