Working in the Dirt!

Students in Mrs. Dale’s second grade class have been working in the dirt! They have learned and investigated what earth’s land is made of and how earth changes.

Second graders were given samples of various types of soils and rocks. Using hand lenses, each child observed, recorded, and inferred information about the soils and rocks.  Next the class was challenged with the question, “How can soil be kept in place?” To answer this question, students were given soil along with other materials. They then experimented and tested several methods of preventing soil erosion. The second grade scientists concluded that soil erosion is slowed or prevented, if the flow of water over the land is slowed!
