High School Math Department Celebrates Pi (π) Day
by Mrs. Ott
Pi Day was celebrated in the high school
mathematics classrooms again this year. It was scheduled for March
14 to coincide with the digits of Pi (3.14159. . .).
Pi Day openly promotes the celebration of mathematics
education. Pi was first used by William Jones in 1706.
This year happens to be the 302nd anniversary of the
introduction of the mathematical symbol π.
Several different classroom activities were used to promote
mathematics and discuss the different uses of π. Some of the classrooms even
enjoyed some “pie” to celebrate the day.
Each year as part of the celebration, the
Math department holds a contest to see who can memorize the most
digits of π.
This year’s winner is Zach Borchardt. He was
able to memorize 510 digits of π.
This is a very impressive number. However, the method
that Zach used to memorize the numbers may be even more impressive.
Zach used his musical talents to help him memorize the
digits. He played the song “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain
White T’s on his guitar and sang the tune with the digits
of π.
