Author Visits Otte Middle School

Lois Ruby, author of fourteen children’s and young adult books, recently spent the day with the Otte Middle School students discussing her books and inspirations for her writing.   Several of Ruby’s books are historical fiction and all of her books have taken countless hours of research, writing, and revisions to complete.  “I try to write books that make kids think long after they have finished reading the book,” said Ruby.   She does this especially well in her books that deal with issues, such as racism.

Several of Lois’ books have won awards, including receiving our own Nebraska Golden Sower award for her book Steal Away Home, which is based on the Underground Railroad.  She also recently won the Children’s Book of the Year award for her book Shanghai Shadows, a story of survival during World War II.  Ruby’s newest book, a ghost story titled, The Secret of Laurel Oaks, will be released in September.  It is already receiving praise from reviewers.

Throughout the day, the author gave presentations, led writing workshops, and autographed copies of her books for students and staff.  Her five-day Nebraska tour included:  Otte Blair Middle School, Blair Arbor Park Intermediate School, Elkhorn Ridge Middle School, Elkhorn Middle School, and Gretna Middle School.  Lois lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband, Tom.
