A Promise of Quality
About our Schools
The school district of Blair encompasses over 142 square miles and serves the Northeastern portion of Washington County, including the city of Blair. Current student enrollment for grades PK-12 exceeds 2,420 students. Over 175 certified staff members and 122 support staff are employed to ensure the best education possible for our youth.
Blair is one of the 25 largest school districts in the State of Nebraska and maintains the highest accreditation from the Nebraska State Department of Education, as well as membership in the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. The patrons of the Blair Community School District have made a commitment to quality education and this is reflected by the excellent facilities and extensive programs available to our students. This commitment to excellence is reflected in the fact that Blair High School, opened to students in 1970, received the prestigious Secondary School Recognition Award for Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education in 1989.
In November, 2006, a $19.6 million Bond Issue, approved by the voters, provided for the building of a new 400 student K-3 building, Deerfield Elementary, located in the northern part of the community. This building opened in the fall, 2008. With the opening of this school, the District will maintain four primary attendance centers for K-3 students. Bond Issue proceeds also provided for a music wing at Blair High School with room to accommodate a band of 225 students and a vocal program of around 200 students. In addition, an auxiliary gymnasium seating 700 spectators was built. All student buildings in the District were also fitted with fire sprinkler systems and upgraded lighting, as well as asbestos removed.
The District grade level configuration includes four Primary Centers, located at North, South, West and Deerfield Elementary Schools (grades PK-3), opened in the fall, 2008, an Intermediate Center at Arbor Park (grades 4-5) opened in the fall of 1990, Gerald Otte Blair Middle School (grades 6-8) opened in the fall of 1997 and Blair High School (grades 9-12), opened in fall of 1970.
A full range of academic and activity programs ensure that the young people of the Blair Community School District are given every opportunity to explore their potential. Students are challenged in a core curriculum of language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics. Additional courses are offered in fine arts, physical education, health, career and technical education, and computer education. Our district has placed an emphasis on integrating computer technology into the curriculum and has provided the resources to make this goal possible. Each classroom is connected to our extensive network, the entire District houses wireless internet connections and each school has access to computer labs, smart boards, interactive response devices and laptop computers for student and staff use. A full range of special services are offered for students in need of these programs. Over 60 separate clubs, organizations, activities, and athletic teams are part of the strong co-curricular program in the Blair School system.
Blair Community Schools offers a comprehensive program for all students. Working together with community leaders and parents “a promise of quality” is something that continues to be a hallmark of the Blair Community Schools.
About our Community
The Blair Community has taken on the motto “a promise of quality” and what you will find that this small suburban community truly lives up to that slogan. Blair has a population of more than 8,500 friendly residents and is ideally located in the heart of the Midwest. We are just a moment’s drive from major Interstates 29 and 80 and less than 30 minutes from Omaha’s Eppley Airfield. From it’s picturesque spot on the banks of the Missouri River, the Blair Community offers residents a wonderful place to live and work and visitors a delightful stay.
Blair offers business an unlimited opportunity for growth. A comprehensive local mix of industry, agriculture, and technology attracts hardworking, honest employees from a highly skilled and motivated labor pool of 250,000 within a 25 mile radius. Industrious, quality conscious Midwesterners are among the most desirable workers in the world. Quality technology is a cornerstone of our economy. Many of our businesses are on the cutting edge of their respective industries. Two major telecommunications firms are headquarters here, and we boast one of the nation’s largest wet corn milling operations, the largest single economic development success story in Nebraska’s history.
Quality healthcare is accessible through Blair’s full-service, accredited hospital, currently undergoing a $25 million renovation and two excellent long term care nursing facilities.
Quality lifestyle fulfills Nebraska’s promise of “the good life.” Blair is an ideal place to simply “unwind.” With over 100 acres of parks, a river front marina, excellent hunting and fishing, tennis courts and a golf course, great recreational opportunities abound. Young people enjoy Blair’s community swimming pool, playgrounds, and youth sports complex featuring baseball, soccer, and softball fields.
Quality education is a long standing tradition in Blair. Our public school system is nationally acclaimed, and we take pride in Dana College, a four-year liberal arts school with a century old Danish heritage.
